PROCESS & FACILITY

CQ Compost currently operates a compost and soil conditioner manufacturing facility at its Emerald site, 'Tinkelara'. The facility is located within the wider farming operation of Tinkelara, and utilises the farming by-products such as hay, straw and stubble as some of the components used as the base for compost manufacture.

To augment the organic farming by-products, a range of additional organic materials are also received at the facility including, cotton gin, woodchips and other organic material. These organic materials are formed into windrows to start the composting process. Liquids wastes are added to the windrows to provide much needed moisture as well as nutrients for microbes involved in the composting process to ensure that the organic material is successfully degraded and that high temperatures are reached to deactivate potential pathogens and control weed seeds.

Windrows are regularly turned using tractor driven windrow turners. Windrow temperatures are maintained above 55 degrees Celsius for at least three days as per AS4454-2012 requirements, but typically temperatures reached are between 65-75 degrees Celsius and are maintained for up to 6 weeks.

The CQ Compost facility operates under an Integrated Management System (IMS) which includes the standards outlined in ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and AS/NZS 4801.
